MOORESVILLE, Ind. – An elderly couple passed away Monday as a result of a Mooresville house fire.

The fire broke out at a home on East High Street, near the South Clay Street intersection.

The Morgan County Coroner’s Office has identified the victims as 79-year-old Mary Featherson and 84-year-old Donald Featherson.

“When we were younger, they used to have a swimming pool, and we would go swimming,” said family friend Christina Lamb. “I used to have a little duck, and it would swim in their pool. There’s just memories here, and looking at this, it’s sad.”

Authorities say Mary died at the scene, while Donald died at Eskenazi Hospital.

“We’d seen them in the front yard doing CPR on the man,” said Gary Haney, who lives nearby.

Haney had been driving by when he saw the flames. He and his wife say they started directing traffic away from the scene to help first responders. Haney says crews with Indianapolis Power & Light were working on power lines nearby when they saw the flames. Haney said the crews ran to the home and kicked down the door to help people get out. Haney believes he saw several people run out of the home, but the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office can not confirm if anyone beyond the couple was inside.

“If it wasn’t for Indianapolis Power and Light, it would have been a whole lot worse,” Haney said.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, but foul play is not being ruled out.

“We are starting out fearing the worst and hopefully not,” Morgan County Sheriff Richard Myers said. “Foul play is never ruled out at the beginning of an investigation. That’s why we start that way and can downsize.”
