LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Oct. 13, 2014) – The cast of “Jane the Virgin” is witty and funny just like their new show.

I traveled to Los Angeles to their set last month to interview the cast. The best part was they acted just like a family off screen, too. They were kind and excited about the new show.

“Jane the Virgin” premieres tonight on Indiana’s 4 and I can give you so many reasons why you should watch.

The show is about a girl named Jane Villanueva who always wanted to save herself until marriage. But, just like in life, unexpected circumstances can change everything. For Jane, it happens when she goes to the doctor for a normal check-up and the doctor accidentally artificially inseminates her.

“Jane is a great role model. She’s strong (and) intelligent. She’s fun and she’s doing something that is not as popular as the things that we put out in the media these days so, I think that’s kind of a new twist to how we view woman and a strong woman lead,” said Gina Rodriguez, who plays the lead role of Jane.

The show is a comedy with plenty of drama that she believes will appeal to anybody.

Andrea Navedo stars as “Xiomara,” Jane’s mother, and Ivonne Coll plays Jane’s strict grandmother.

“When I read the story, it was like what the heck? I loved it. I thought it was funny, compelling, human, real, unreal, telenovela, dramatic, mellow, (and) non-mellow,” Coll said.

“Jane the Virgin” will keep you entertained and guessing what will happen next. On the show, Jane will have to balance her relationship with her boyfriend, Michael, and the father of the child, Rafael, who also happens to be her married boss.

“In life, we have these major things happen every day and we have a choice we can either handle it or we can freak out about it and you see a girl who’s dealt with a crazy, out-of-this-world situation. Then, you get to kind of see how she handles it, which I think is a beautiful thing for TV to be focusing on,” said Justin Baldoni, who plays Rafael.

Brett Dier plays Michael.

“I like how there’s kind of a dark side to Michael at the same time at that you don’t see, but you’ll see it,” Dier said.

When asked why his character is “shady,” Dier said he couldn’t say.

There will be plenty of surprises on this show. I think it’s safe to say that Rafael’s wife, Petra, may be the show’s villain.

“I think people are going to fall in love with the characters and the relationships between them,” said Yael Grobglas, who plays Petra.

“Jane the Virgin” is the perfect blend of a telenovela. Jaime Camil plays a famous telenovela star on the show and that is not far from reality. Camil starred in “La Fea Mas Bella” and “Mi Destino Eres Tu.”

“I will never get tired of saying this in every single interview we do –starting cast, crew, production network. We just (are) surrounded by beautiful people and I think that will transmit to the screen,” Jaime said.

“Jane the Virgin” premieres tonight at 9 p.m. on Indiana’s 4.
