BARTHOLOMEW COUNTY, Ind. — One person is dead following a vehicle collision on I-65 in Bartholomew County which not only claimed one life, but sent two other individuals to the hospital.

According to the Columbus Police Department, the two vehicle accident occurred around 4:45 p.m. in the northbound lane of I-65 near mile marker 67.

Witnesses told police a 2008 Pontiac was backing up on the interstate – traveling south in the left northbound lane – toward a cross over when the Pontiac was struck by a 2019 Honda Pilot.

Police say the Pontiac become engulfed in flames following the impact and the driver was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The driver of the Honda Pilot was transported to Columbus Regional Hospital for non life threatening injuries while the passenger in the Honda was airlifted to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis for treatment.

Positive identification of the deceased is still pending as the crash remains under investigation.

The northbound lanes of I-65 were closed for nearly three and a half hours between mile markers 64 and 68.
