KOKOMO, Ind. (Oct. 22, 2014) - A 9-month-old boy and his father were shot in a gun-cleaning accident in Kokomo on Wednesday.

Howard County Sheriff's Deputies responded to the 400 block of Fawn Drive just before 5 p.m. with reports that two people had been shot.

Upon arrival they discovered the homeowner, 31-year-old John W. Hambaugh III and his 9-month-old son had each been shot.

Witnesses say Hambaugh was sitting in the kitchen, preparing to clean his handgun.

The Sheriff's Department say when Hambaugh attempted to disassemble the gun, a round had inadvertently been left in the handgun and as he attempted to remove the slide, the bullet discharged.

It struck the inside of Hambaugh’s left thigh, traveled through his thigh, and then struck the child in the head.

Hambaugh's 9-month-old son was to the side of him at the time of the shooting.

One round was fired.

Both Hambaugh and his son were transported to Community Howard Regional Hospital in Kokomo.

Shortly after their arrival, the child was airlifted to Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health where he remains in critical condition Thursday morning.

Hambaugh was treated and expected to be quickly released.

According to the Howard County Sheriff's Department, this case remains active pending further investigation.
