With a flick of the switch and thousands of people cheering and clapping, the “official” start to the holiday season got underway with the lighting of Monument Circle Friday night.

A crowd numbering 100,000 plus were treated to singing, dancing and other entertainment as well as Santa Claus.

The feature attraction of this yearly event is the monument which is transformed into the “World’s Largest Christmas Tree’ which features 4,784 lights and 52 garland strands to create the 242-foot display.

Other parts of the holiday display include 26 giant toy soldiers and sailors and 26 peppermint sticks surrounding the Circle, as well as 56,700 twinkle lights in the trees illuminating the area’s walkways.

All of the lights and landscape ornaments will be on display until Jan 11.
