LAFAYETTE (May 22, 2014) – A Purdue University student accused of shooting and stabbing a classmate to death will pursue the insanity defense.
The attorney for Cody Cousins filed a “Notice of Defense of Mental Disease or Defect” indicating the move. Cousins now has a public defender, Kirk Freeman, after asking the court to switch from his previous attorney.
The court granted a request earlier this month to have Cousins’ mental health evaluated. His attorney also filed a change of venue request to have the trial moved out of Tippecanoe County. The judge hasn’t ruled on that request yet.
Cousins, 23, said he’s been diagnosed with schizophrenia by a jail doctor. He is said to be taking Depakote to treat the illness.
