BROWNSBURG, Ind. – Some fast thinking…and even faster running…regulars at a Brownsburg restaurant looked up this morning to spot a diner heading out the door after refusing to pay his bill and attempting to steal the cash register.

“A patron came in about seven to seven thirty this morning and had some breakfast here at our Flap Jack’s, and at the same time the waitress presented his check, he advised her he did not have any money to pay for his food,” said Brownsburg Police Capt. Jennifer Barett.

That’s when waitress Marilyn Price said Roger Solaris Alvarado grabbed the cash register and headed for the door.

“I just heard a real loud noise and turned around from the table with my manager and we both hollered at the same time, ‘Stop him!’, and he was trying to get out the door with the register.”

Jared Haugen and a table full of regulars gave chase.

“I tried grabbing him before he got out the door and then he got me in a headlock outside and then I got him off of me then we run across the parking lot and he darts across 136,” said Haugen who was able to tackle Solaris Alvarado in the front yard of an American Legion post on the other side of the busy state highway. “I think he was getting tired. He was holding up his pants with one hand.”

The Breakfast Club held onto Solaris Alvarado until police arrived and discovered the suspect was armed.

Haugen didn’t know the man he held down on the ground had a gun, and lamented that this was the day he didn’t have his own weapon.

Waitress Marilyn Price said she was thankful for her customer’s quick response and protection and Flap Jack’s bought its heroes their breakfasts.
