INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.– Fire investigators found what’s described as an “intact Molotov cocktail” at the scene of Wednesday’s early morning business fire. According to the police report, the fire is being considered an arson.
Indianapolis Fire responded to the Swift Custom Wheels shop on East 38th Street just after 4 a.m. The single-story building holds three businesses, but the fire was contained to the service side of the Swift Custom Wheels shop. There were cars in the service area and the fire damaged about four of them, according to Public Information Officer with the Indianapolis Fire Department Eric Guhl.
He said crews took extra precautions staying hydrated due to the hot and humid temperatures. Flames came up through the roof of the building, reigniting at least once.
IFD officials said the Molotov cocktail device was found near the scene but has not been connected to the fire. They said the device was still intact and had not deployed.
Keystone Avenue was closed to through traffic at the intersection of East 38th street for more than two hours while fire hoses were stretched across the street. Keystone Avenue reopened to traffic heading north at about 6:20 a.m. The entire intersection reopened by the 7:30.
No arrests have been made in this case. The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation.
