INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- A high school senior has been overwhelmed by support, after his mom died and left him with some huge responsibilities.

Southport High School teacher Megan Woodward never thought a Gofundme page would turn into a phenomenon. Yet there she sat on Wednesday, $25,000 in the bank for a very special student.

"It hurts to think of him being alone, and not being successful, when he has so much in front of him," Woodward said.

Her student, 18-year-old Ethan Knox, has aspirations to go to Purdue and become an astrophysicist. Ethan even has stacks of graduate-level physics books at home, which he reads for fun.

Two weeks ago, his mom, Laura Knox, died of a possible overdose. Without his dad, Ethan is alone now to take care of all the things his mom left behind, including her funerals, bills, mortgage, and other expenses. His grandfather is also living with him and had depended on his mom for support.

"All the responsibilities of her are now my responsibilities, on top of all the responsibilities of the legal stuff and financial stuff," Knox said.

That's why Woodward wanted to step in. She started the Gofundme with a goal of just $1,000 and in five days, had already raised more than $25,000.

"All of a sudden it just, it took off," Woodward said.

Ethan, who is an Eagle Scout and top student, said he was reluctant to ask for help at first. Now he's thankful to have so much support, from people nearby and even those he doesn't know.

"The sense of community is just awesome and it really helps drive me in the morning when I have all these things to do and no idea how to get them done. I think to myself, 'Hey, all these other people think I can do it, I probably can,'" Knox said.
