INDIANAPOLIS – Hazmat crews boarded an Indianapolis Public Schools bus after students reported a suspicious substance.

According to IPS spokesman John Althardt, the bus was taking home students from Harshman Magnet Middle School. A balloon burst, spilling a white substance inside. Several students said they experienced eye irritation as a result of the powder.

After being cleared to go home, the students were picked up by another bus and taken home. An IPS mechanic drove the bus to nearby Indianapolis Fire Department Station 30 on Tibbs Avenue where Hazmat crews tested the substance. A bomb squad crew also investigated.

A sample from the bus will be sent to a lab. The results are expected in a day or two.
