HENRY COUNTY (Dec. 18, 2013) – Henry County crews are on the scene of a house fire in the 600 block of E. Broad Street in Spiceland in which one person was presumed dead and another was seriously hurt.

Investigators from the Henry County Sheriff’s Office tell FOX59 that a woman was inside the home. Her husband went inside to save her but was overcome by the flames and had to get out.

The man suffered serious injuries and was taken by helicopter to Eskenazi Hospital in Indianapolis. The coroner has been called to the scene.

A neighbor told FOX59 that her husband helped pulled the man out of the burning home.

“He couldn’t get in the small door, but he got the overhead door open. He heard (the man) coughing and dragged him out by his feet and to the snow. And we could see we were all in the smoke, so I helped him drag him in the other direction and he kept trying to get up and he said, ‘Get me up, get me up,” but he wouldn’t have been strong enough,” said neighbor Lindy Gideon.

“We wished we could’ve done more,” she said. “There was nothing that…(the home) went up so fast, I’ve never seen anything like it before. And if the wind had been blowing this way, all the embers would have been on us. And you just thank God every day. God be with (the victim). He’s in bad shape.”

Multiple departments responded, and crews were still putting out hotspots as of 7 a.m. Fire crews said a frozen hydrant nearby hampered the firefighting effort. Crews had to use another hydrant down the block.

The fire remains under investigation.
