INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (April 13, 2014)—Crews with the Indianapolis Fire Department rescued a dog that was unable to return to shore after going for a swim on the west side of Indianapolis Sunday.

Rescue crews were dispatched to White River in the area of 16th Street and Lafayette Road around 6 p.m. The dog’s owner told firefighters it was not unusual for his dog, Adam, to take a swim. However, during this instance, Adam swam to an island under the bridge, approximately 50 feet from shore, and could not get back.

Firefighters used several methods to coax the dog to swim back to shore, including using a stuffed teddy bear, animal treats and encouraging words. After no avail, crews sent a rescue boat around 6:38 p.m. to retrieve the the 5-year-old Boxer Chow mix.
