Elkhart Police: 12-year-old girl starts apartment fire, stabs step-mother to death

ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. (July 24, 2015) – Elkhart police say a 12-year-old girl set an apartment on fire and stabbed her step-mother to death.

According to Fox28, police were originally called to the scene for a reported structure fire around 10:09 p.m. Thursday.

An investigation revealed that the girl was upset with her step-mother and father, so she started a fire in her bedroom.

The girl and her step-mother got into a verbal argument, and the girl stabbed her step-mother to death.

The girl’s father tried to restrain her, and she also stabbed him.

Fox28 reports she then ran away from the residence.

Police later found the girl walking around the area. She was taken into custody, and she is being held in the Elkhart County Juvenile Detention Center pending a hearing.
