One neighbor’s work to protect himself and those around him could be the key to solving the case of a vacant home that caught fire twice Sunday.
The home, at New York and Dequincy, caught fire for the first time around 3 a.m. Sunday. It later flared up again, that same afternoon.
Dozens of neighbors called 911, concerned about their own safety. As they did, nearby homeowner Tony Johnson thought he might have seen something suspicious.
“(I) noticed a white male take off running down the alley,” Johnson said.
Johnson had seen the man on his home security system. Not only did he see him and then the fire shortly after he ran, but Johnson caught the man on camera. He said it’s not getting someone in trouble, but protecting his own neighborhood that he’s concerned about.
“Maybe it might help the next person to (get cameras) as well,” Johnson said.
Investigators are looking into the cause of the fire. Anyone with information is encouraged to call IMPD or CrimeStoppers.
