MUNCIE, Ind. -- Muncie police say a dispute led to a deadly Thursday night shooting in the parking lot of a Walmart store.

Police confirmed that officers responded to the Walmart at 1501 E. 29th Street around 11:18 p.m. on a report of a person shot.

Police found 24-year-old Chase Woolums suffering from an apparent gunshot wound, not breathing and bleeding from his mouth.

Woolums was taken to an area hospital; he was pronounced dead shortly after that.

Muncie police received information about a possible suspect and a vehicle description and began a search.

Witnesses said the suspect was a Yorktown man in his early 30s and driving a Dodge Dakota pickup. Police later identified him as 31-year-old Justin Bennett.

Around 12:45 a.m., police located a Dodge Dakota, and a chase began after the driver, Bennett, refused to pull over.

According to police, the chase was soon over, Bennett was taken into custody and officers found a shell casing on the floor of the truck.

Preliminary charges against Bennett include murder and unlawful possession of a firearm by a violent felon.

The shooting remains under investigation.
