INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (Oct. 23, 2014) - Thieves left behind shattered glass and a big mess for residents at one south side apartment complex.

IMPD said more than 30 cars were broken into early Thursday morning. The car break-ins happened at Lighthouse Landings Apartment Homes, near W. Banta Rd. and S. Belmont Ave., while many residents were sound asleep in their apartments. They woke up to find their car windows busted and items stolen.

Police believe a group of five to six people are responsible. Investigators do not have a good description of the suspects but someone saw the group leave in a pair of black and white SUVs.

Devyn Purtlebaugh's passenger side window was smashed even though she never leaves anything of value in her car.

"So whoever it was, I mean, they obviously knew what they were doing and they got a lot of cars in a short amount of time," said Purtlebaugh.

Police are still adding up the number of items taken from the vehicles. Victims told FOX59 electronics like laptops and GPS devices were stolen.

"Our privacy was invaded so it gives you a sense of vulnerability," said Purtlebaugh.

Another car with a busted window was discovered at a nearby apartment complex called Dakota Ridge. Police could not say if the crimes are related.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 317-262-TIPS.
