INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (Jan. 21, 2016) – Indianapolis Metropolitan police arrested a man in connection with an attempted armed robbery that led to an alert at IUPUI last week.

Charges against Riccardo Hutchins include burglary while armed with a deadly weapon, criminal confinement and robbery. On Jan. 13, police investigated a home invasion near campus in which the victim fought off his attacker.

Police said the man heard a knock at the door and opened it; the suspect—later identified as Hutchins—rushed into the apartment and said he wanted cell phones. He brandished a gun, but one of the victims, an IUPUI student, realized it was a fake and struggled with Hutchins.

Hutchins didn’t end up stealing anything, police said, although the IUPUI student suffered an injury to his nose. Hutchins originally eluded police despite a search.
