Putnam County authorities still looking for suspect after day-long search

PUTNAM COUNTY, Ind. — Deputies are searching for a wanted suspect that they say led them on a chase Wednesday afternoon.

The Putnam County Sheriff’s Department said 41-year-old Jeffrey Brown is wanted out of Clay County for failure to appear on a residential entry charge. He is also wanted out of Putnam County for a possession of a handgun without a license charge.

The department said detectives found Brown parked in Greencastle near Vine and Seminary Streets and tried to take him into custody. They say Brown took off in his truck, leading police on a chase across the county.

When the chase initiated, one of the deputies got into a crash with four other vehicles. The deputy and the driver in one of the vehicles were transported to the hospital to be checked out. A K-9 was also in the car, but they are all okay.

Deputies say Brown stole a vehicle belonging to a company working on a bridge near County Road 400 West and continued fleeing law enforcement.

“At that time, the bridge was being worked on by a crew doing some core-sampling. They had some vehicles out there. The suspect exited his vehicle, commandeered one of their vehicles,” said Scott Ducker with the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office.

The chase continued to the southwest portion of the county, where the department said Brown fled into a wooded area near Croys Creek Church.

Police from seven different agencies set up a perimeter and searched for Brown using multiple K9 units and a helicopter. The search continued for several hours, but they were not able to find Brown. Deputies say now, more than 24 hours later, the search is beginning to intensify.

“It becomes much more challenging as the hours pass, the farther he can get away from us. At this point, we’re kind of relying on any input from the public as far as sightings or if they know where he might be. And obviously, our officers are aggressively patrolling the area trying to track down to locate the suspect. But again, as the hours pass by, it becomes harder and harder to track him down,” said Deputy Ducker.

Brown is 41 years old, approximately 6’4″, 195 pounds, has brown hair and a distinct tattoo on his neck.

Authorities warn not to approach Brown, as he may be armed and dangerous.

Anyone with information about Brown’s whereabouts is asked to call the police.
