WINCHESTER, Ind.– A well-known Winchester funeral director will spend time in jail for stealing from a corpse just moments after a graveside funeral.
Greg Thayer, 64, was sentenced to one year for theft. The sentence was suspended except for 20 days in jail and 40 days of home detention.
According to court documents, Thayer stole a wedding ring from a dead man’s body and then traveled 25 miles away to Richmond and pawned it for $75. This happened within hours of the funeral service.
When police questioned him, Thayer reportedly confessed to taking the ring and offered to buy it back from the pawn shop if that would make the situation go away.
Thayer will report to the Randolph County Jail on Friday.
