PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. (April 11, 2014) – A Plainfield boy’s death was an accident, according to new information from a Florida coroner.

Zachary Dickman, 13, died Saturday after falling from a 15th-story balcony at the condominium building where he was vacationing with family. The autopsy showed Dickman died from blunt force trauma to the head. His death was ruled an accident.

Dickman was checking out of the condo Saturday morning when he realized he’d forgotten his phone. He told his grandmother he needed to go up and get it. When he didn’t return for several minutes, his grandmother went looking for him and realized he’d fallen.

Dickman was an honor roll student at Plainfield Community Middle School, where he attended seventh grade. He was also in the band, school officials said. Counselors were made available for students this week.

The school released a statement Monday about his death:

We are deeply saddened to learn of the death of one of our students, Zachary Dickman, who died while in Florida over spring break. Zach was in 7th grade at Plainfield Community Middle School. He was an honor roll student, well-liked and extremely bright. He was also active in the Plainfield Community Middle School band.

The loss of Zach is a sobering tragedy for our school community. Staff and students have been informed of this loss. Counselors are available to students and staff for assistance in answering any questions and coping with their grief.

We extend our heartfelt sympathy to Zach’s family. We will provide information about memorial services and funeral arrangements once available. Thank you for your concern at this difficult time.
