DETROIT, MI (February 20, 2015) – A same-sex couple in Detroit is outraged after a doctor refused to treat their newborn child.

Krista and Jami Contreras welcomed their beautiful baby into the world in October 2014.

About a week later, the mother’s booked an appointment with Doctor Vesna Roi of Eastlake Pediatrics. According to Fox2, when they arrived at the office, another doctor greeted them and told them that Doctor Roi prayed on the matter and decided to not care for their baby.

The Contreras were very upset, but it turns out that the doctor did not break any laws.

According to the American Medical Association doctors can refuse treatment if the matter is not compatible with their personal, religious or moral beliefs.

Jami Contreras spoke with Fox2: “We’re not your patient – she’s your patient. And the fact is that your job is to keep babies healthy and you can’t keep a baby healthy that has gay parents?”

The Contreras also told Fox2 that they’re grateful their daughter was too young to know what was going on and that she didn’t have to feel the discrimination they felt.
