(Nov. 11, 2014) – Earlier this year, the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles revealed that some vehicles were misclassified and some Hoosiers overpaid on excise taxes when registering.

The BMV estimated that 185,000 Hoosiers were due about $29 million in refunds. Everyone who is entitled to one will be notified by mail.

The agency also has a website where Hoosiers can find out if they’re eligible and print out a form.

The secure site asks for your name and either your driver’s license number or social security number. Both individuals and businesses can check to see if they’ll get a refund.

If you are eligible, you’ll be able to print out a claim form and find out how to submit your claim. If you’re ineligible, the website will let you know.

The BMV said it will take about 30 days to process your claim after it receives your form.

To find check your eligibility, go to and look for the green “check your excise tax refund eligibility” icon on the right side of the page.
