GREENWOOD (Aug. 15, 2014) – Don’t be alarmed by a flurry of police activity around the Greenwood Park Mall Sunday night.

The FBI is holding a training exercise that simulates a terrorist attack. Several central Indiana police and fire departments are participating in the drill. If you’re out shopping Sunday, you’ll probably notice a large police and fire presence for what’s called the “Complex Mall Attack” initiative.

The Greenwood operation, known as “INDYMALLEX,” is the capstone exercise of a series of similar drills across the country. The FBI said it’s larger and more complex than the earlier exercises.

Authorities want area residents to know the operation is taking place so they don’t think something is wrong Sunday night.

“We do not, absolutely do not want them to have any undue concern when they see what’s going on,” said Jay Abbott, special agent in charge of the FBI Indianapolis Field Office.

The drill will start at 7 p.m., after the Greenwood Park Mall has closed.

Participating agencies include: Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI); Simon Property Group; Indiana State Police (ISP); Indianapolis Department of Homeland Security (DHS); Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD); Greenwood Police Department (GPD); Indianapolis Fire Department (IFD); Greenwood Fire Department (GFD);Indianapolis EMS (IEMS); The MESH Coalition; Johnson County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO).
