They’re more than just man’s best friend. Some puppies are providing preschoolers with a unique way to learn.

The United Way is part of a new program which helps youngsters expand their vocabulary. The students “teach” the puppies all the new words they’re learning.  It’s inspired by the show “Martha Speaks”, which is about a talking dog.

“ Volunteers encourage them to tell the pups new words they learned and it’s really about them being able to relax and have fun because the more they play- they’re really learning through that,” said Heather Girton with the United Way.

Researchers said a low vocabulary is a child’s greatest challenge on the first day of kindergarten.
