The family of the school bus driver killed in a crash issued a statement Wednesday, thanking supporters for the thoughts and prayers.

Thomas Spencer, 60, and student Donasty Smith, 5, were pronounced dead after the Indianapolis Lighthouse Charter School bus crashed into an east side bridge Monday morning.

The bus had approximately 50 children on it, ages 5-16.

Ten of those students were transported to Riley at IU Health and Wishard Hospital.  Two male students at Riley at IU Health were listed in critical condition.  A Wishard Hospital representative said eight patients were treated for non-life threatening injuries and later released.

Spencer’s family released the following statement:

“The Spencer family, although grieving themselves over the loss of Tommy, would like the family of Donasty Smith to know that we are praying for their loss, and that we continue to pray for all the students injured in Monday’s tragedy. Tommy loved driving and he especially enjoyed interacting with the kids. We appreciate everyone’s thoughts and prayers and would ask everyone to continue praying for the students at Lighthouse Charter School.”
