INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (Jan. 9, 2014)– Shortly before 8 p.m. Sunday, as Indianapolis was hunkered down in near-blizzard conditions, two men entered a westside house and shot a pair of brothers, killing one, seriously wounding the other, in a failed home invasion robbery and the family thinks their neighbors know something.

“Somebody’s routine has changed. Someone’s son has left. Someone’s boyfriend is not there or acting differently.”

Sara Anderson sat on the couch of her sister’s home in the 900 block of King Avenue, two blocks north of IMPD’s southwest district headquarters, and wept as she recounted the killing of her nephew Deshawn Ward, 19, and the shooting of his brother Dominque Baquet, 20.

“Just shooting and yelling and screaming,” she said. “That’s it. There weren’t too many other words.”

No conversations beyond demands for money that the family claims wasn’t there. Deshawn struggled with one of the gunmen and was fatally wounded. Dominque fought briefly before breaking off the battle only to be shot five times. He survived to be questioned by police.

Family members said they’ve received information from area residents and a suspicious visit from a man who shot at Dominique last summer who seemed more curious than concerned.

Deshawn worked at the Family Dollar store nearby where employees and customers are heartbroken over his death.

“It’s a huge tragedy,” said his boss Thomas Sams. “Everybody’s got a big heartache. We’ve cried, shed our tears. Kind of like everybody’s living a big dream, afraid to wake up.”

Deshawn’s family and friends think his killers are nearby because Sunday night’s weather would seem to preclude strangers picking their target at random.

“You don’t come across town in a blizzard to kill somebody,” said Anderson, “and don’t get anything because there’s nothing here to take so it clearly was someone from here and someone who’s been over here.”

IMPD investigators tell Fox59 News they were able to track the escape route of the suspects behind the family home.

Detectives are coming up with some of the same names the family has heard.

“Everybody that I see is a suspect,” said Anderson. “They took a wonderful boy away.”

If you have any information about the killing of deshawn Ward, call Crimestoppers at 262-TIPS.
