Fatal accident closes I-69 near Pendleton

PENDLETON, IND. – A fatal accident involving a vehicle carrying hazardous materials blocked traffic on Interstate 69 near Pendleton, Ind. in Madison County Wednesday.

According to the Indiana Department of Transportation, the highway was blocked in both directions for several hours.

The accident happened Wednesday morning between exits 19 and 22, blocking both southbound and northbound traffic. Madison County EMA officials said drivers should avoid the area entirely.

Northbound 69 was closed north of State Road 38. Southbound 69 was closed from State Road 9 to State Road 38.

It took several hours for crews to complete clean-up and investigation.

Hazmat crews worked to clean the area. Spilled material included a substance used to make asphalt as well as diesel fuel and battery acid.

INDOT couldn’t provide any additional details about the crash.

As a result of the traffic backup, at least one additional crash occurred. State Police advised motorists to slow down due to the extensive back up.
