SHELBY COUNTY, Ind. (Nov. 19, 2015)— A St. Paul man was killed in a crash on Interstate 74 in Shelby County Thursday evening.

The crash occurred just before 5:30 p.m. and involved a van and semi-tractor trailer. Investigators say a van was traveling eastbound on I-74 at the 115 mile marker and left the roadway for an unknown reason. The van traveled through the grass median and struck a semi-tractor trailer going westbound.  There were no cable barriers in the area.

The driver of the van, James E. Byard, 78, of St. Paul, was pronounced deceased at the crash scene. He was the only person in the van. The driver of the Fed-Ex tractor- trailer, Jerry Hodgkin, 45, of Cincinnati, Ohio was transported to Major Hospital with a hand injury.

The east and westbound lanes of I-74 were closed for about two hours and have reopened. The crash remains under investigation.
