INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (March 27, 2015)-- The father of a Carmel teacher's aid continues the fight to get his son back home after being arrested in Spain.

"He was doing better than I was. He said he is not enjoying it, spending everyday trying to figure out how he got there," said Dale Wright, father of Brett Wright.

Brett has been in prison in Madrid since March 15.

"It's been a rough journey hearing the news and seeing him in that situation," said Dale.

The Wright family believes this is all a mistake and possibly the result of racial profiling.

"There were questions from the police officers to Brett if he was Islamic. Brett tired to explain his skin color via mom white and dad black," said Wright.

Dale talked to FOX59 via FaceTime from Spain.

Brett, 23, is in jail in Spain after fighting with police officers.

The Carmel Clay Middle School Special Education teaching assistant was meeting up his brother in Madrid when he was arrested. Brett told his father he fought with the officers because he thought he was being mugged.

The officers were not in uniform, and Wright says they lunged at him.

This is his first time out of the country, and Wright's family thinks heightened security measures in Europe may have led to racial profiling. Spanish attorneys are working to get a plea deal for Brett Wright soon on charges of assaulting an officer and resisting arrest.

With the Easter holiday, Brett Wright will likely be in the Madrid prison for another ten days.

"He wanted me to tell everyone he loves you and really thanks you for everything you done and he is hoping to be out of there really soon," said Dale Wright.

A GoFundMe account raised more than twelve thousand dollars for the family's legal and travel expenses in less than twenty four hours. The account is no longer active.
