INDIANAPOLIS,Ind. (September 26, 2015)–Indianapolis Firefighters say Saturday’s fire was the sixth time this year crews have been sent to the east side vacant RCA campus. The plant that at one time employed some 8,000 people has stood vacant over 25 years.
Smoke and flames were showing from the building as fire crews arrived at 6:39 p.m. Firefighters brought the blaze under control within eight minutes.
Fire officials say the fire appeared to have burned long enough to compromise the structural integrity of the roof. An air handling unit weighing hundreds of pounds, fell through the roof and onto what appeared to be a pile of combustibles.
There were no injuries reported. Firefighters say they worry that reports of squatters and juveniles in and out of the structure will result in serious injury.
Fire officials ask anyone seeing any unusual activity to report it by calling 911 or Crime Stoppers at 262-TIPS.
