Marion County first responders are preparing in case of a full-scale chemical emergency.

Fire, police and EMS crews took part in a special drill Tuesday. They simulated a train car running into a vehicle, releasing gases into the air.

The exercise tested how well each agency can communicate with one another. That’s something that is crucial during the emergency.

“We don’t have that much time before serious injuries can occur so we need to be able to have people make decisions quickly and safely,” said Bill Beranek, Chairman, of the Marion County Emergency Planning Committee.

All the crews met after the exercise to go over what they did right and what they could do better next time.
