FISHERS, Ind.-  The City of Fishers  is considering becoming more selective with the types of businesses they allow to build in one area of the city.

Mayor Scott Fadness is proposing a new commercial zoning ordinance for the corridor between the 106th Street and 116th Street interchanges.

Next year, IKEA and Topgolf will both open facilities in that section of the city in 2017.

Fishers is hoping to capitalize off this growth and convince other companies to move there as well.

Eventually, Mayor Fadness wants to see a company choose to bring its corporate headquarters to Fishers.

To make that dream a reality he believes the city needs to update its commercial zoning ordinance for the I-69 corridor around 106th and 116th Streets.

The current regulations have been in place since the mid-1980s and for the most part allow for any type of use, with no architectural or size standards.

“Fishers for a long time has been relatively reactive when it comes to zoning, basically we just sit back and wait for people to come up with ideas and we allow them to go ahead and build pretty much whatever they like,” said Mayor Fadness.

Some examples of development the mayor does not want to see in the area under consideration include:

  • Heavy industrial facilities
  • Fast food and retail chains that don’t fit with his “vision for the city.”

If the proposed ordinance is approved it would have no impact on development already in the works.

The Fishers Planning Commission will evaluate the proposal on Tuesday, May 10.

If it gets a favorable recommendation from the planning commission, it then moves the City Council for a full vote.
