FISHERS, Ind. — Police found a man and a woman dead inside a Fishers apartment after a standoff that lasted several hours.

Police say they were at The Woods of Britton Apartment Homes, near 141st Street and State Road 37, for a welfare check.

As officers reached the second story of the apartment, they were met with gunfire but were unharmed.

The armed man then barricaded himself in an apartment, according to officials.

Officers tried to communicate with the suspect, but they were unable to. Emergency Response Team members entered the apartment, and officers found a 34-year-old woman and a 48-year-old man suffering from injuries believed to be from a gun. They both died at the scene.

At this time, based on the investigation, police believe they knew each another, and officers are not searching for any suspects.

Some residents were evacuated during the standoff, others were asked to take shelter in place, and the public was asked to avoid the area.

“My daughter and my wife they are locked up in the bathroom right now — second floor,” Andrew Maynard told FOX59’s Mike Sullivan during the standoff.

Maynard says he lives in an apartment close to the suspect. His family began communicating with him through FaceTime. Monday was his daughter’s ninth birthday.

“I’m just hoping everything is going to be okay,” described Maynard in the moment. “I’m scared.”
