Former House Speaker Tom Foley has died at the age 84, according to House Democratic aides.

Foley was the 57th Speaker of the House. The Democrat represented Washington’s 5th district for 30 years, from 1965 to 1995.

Foley was also the first Speaker since the Civil War to lose a re-election campaign.

He also served as U.S. Ambassador to Japan for four years during the Clinton administration.
