A former Muncie Central High School principal has been found guilty for failing to report a student’s rape to police.

Christopher Smith was convicted of failure to immediately report child abuse or neglect, a class B misdemeanor, for the Nov. 9, 2010, incident.

Steven Moore raped a then 16-year-old girl inside of a bathroom at the school. The victim went to the office to report the crime. Smith left the girl sitting in his office for more than two hours before he called police.

The judge sentenced Smith to 120 days in jail, suspended. That means Smith will essentially be serving 120 days of supervised probation. He’ll also have to serve 100 hours of community service in addition to paying fines and court costs.

Moore was sentenced to five years with four years executed and one year probation back in September 2011.
