Police say four cars have been damaged by a sinkhole near 96th and Keystone.

The sinkhole is along River Road, just a little east of an entrance to River Road Apartments.

River Road is now closed between 86th and 96th Streets. It’s not clear how long the road will remain closed.

A sinkhole happens when a hidden hole caves in. Water, sometimes from heavy rains, makes its way beneath the surface often carving out caverns. When the caverns get too big, the ground gives way, forming a sudden hole.

Increased rain creates the potential of similar events happening. Urban areas with aging pipes are always at risk when heavy rains put pressure on storm sewer systems, experts say.

Police originally reported the hole had enveloped four cars. They later clarified their report.
