SOUTH BEND, Ind. (August 25, 2015) — Officials say six students and an assistant coach are facing disciplinary action from the Indiana High School Athletic Association after an apparent fight at a football game.

WSBT-TV reports that referees suspended the season opener for South Bend Washington and Michigan City high schools last Friday at halftime after IHSAA officials said it wouldn’t be safe to continue.

IHSAA Commissioner Bobby Cox has placed both teams on probation for the remainder of the 2015 season, and suspended six players and an assistant coach.

The suspended students, four from Michigan City and two from South Bend Washington, are suspended from the next game and must complete the Sportsmanship course available at before Friday, September 4.

South Bend Washington assistant coach Keith Witherspoon has been suspended indefinitely by the school and has been instructed by IHSAA to take the Teaching and Role Modeling Behavior online course, also offered at

IHSAA officials say that since this game did not end in an appropriate manner, it will be scored as a double forfeit.

“Sportsmanship is still a primary focus of the IHSAA,” said the commissioner. “Incidents of this nature erode the interscholastic experience for everyone involved. I applaud both schools for proactively meeting at Michigan City High School the next day to discuss the incidents of the game and formulate future plans to eliminate undesirable behaviors.”

Both schools had submitted reports to IHSAA for review prior to Tuesday’s discipline decisions.

Stan Wruble is on the South Bend School Board. He says he hopes it’ll be a learning experience for students. Michigan City High School Principal Wendel McCollum also hopes it’s a teachable moment.
