WHITING, Ind. (August 12, 2015) — An unplanned outage at a BP oil refinery in Whiting is causing gas prices to spike across Indiana and the Midwest.

The Whiting refinery had issues with equipment last weekend, causing supply concerns and prince increases. The largest of three crude distillation units was shut down and the rest of the refinery is operating at reduced production.

Tuesday’s gas prices in Indiana spiked up by 30-40 cents a gallon. According to, the most affected states are Michigan, Indiana, Ohio and Illinois, but others are seeing increases.

The BP refinery affected is the largest in the Midwest. Repairs are expected to take at least a month, maybe longer.
