INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.– A 7-year-old boy faces charges after the boy allegedly shot his father during an argument.

According to court documents, the incident occurred around 1 p.m. on Nov. 13 at a home in the 1700 block of Westwood Street. Police arrived and found 37-year old Charles Yancey with a gunshot wound to the wrist.

While he went to the hospital, police found Yancey’s 7-year old son at his grandparents’ house.

Court documents say the little boy told police that he had shot his father, and it was no accident. The boy said he was upset with his father, and angry that he was going to have to spend the weekend with him,  but would not go into further detail.

Police say the condition of the home was deplorable, with trash and clothing all over. Three guns were found in the home, and none of them were locked up. The ammunition was also openly accessible.

The boy told police his father had allowed him to handle the guns before, and showed him how to load them.

When officers found the gun allegedly used by the boy, it had two rounds jammed in it, indicating that the boy had tried to fire more than once.

Yancey, 37, and Ruby Yancey, 34, were both arrested and charged with neglect of a dependent due to the guns not being properly secured and the condition of the home. Ruby Yancey is not the boy’s mother.

The 7-year old boy was also arrested on a juvenile charge of criminal recklessness. He was transported to Community South for a psychological evaluation and has since been transferred to Community North.

According to court documents, police were called to the same home just two days before the shooting after the boy had taken a taser from his mother’s dresser. He threw it away because it didn’t work. He also told his mother that he dreamed of killing his father, mother and her other children.
