Greenwood residents will soon have a new pool to swim laps in after officials closed the old pool over safety concerns.

The city has approved building the new pool at Freedom Park on the city’s southwest side.

Officials had originally considered Craig Park but that would have significantly delayed the pool’s opening because several buildings would have to be demolished before construction could begin.

The YMCA of Greater Indianapolis will operate the new $10 million aquatic center and may also build a fitness center at the park.

A splash pad is being built in the old pool’s location.

If officials can nail down an architect soon, the new pool could open as early as the middle of next Summer.
