(June 6, 2014) – Happy National Doughnut Day!

National Doughnut Day is celebrated every year on the first Friday of June.

The holiday originated with the the Salvation Army in Chicago in 1938 as a salute to the women who served doughnuts to U.S. soldiers during World War I.

The Salvation Army’s “doughnut lassies” continued that service during World War II and cemented the doughnut’s place in the American diet.

In honor of today, several businesses are celebrating by giving away free treats including Krispy Kreme, Dunkin’ Donuts, and Tim Hortons.
