A few hours were spent to help bring a lifetime of change for people facing breast cancer and their loved ones. Saturday morning the American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer 5K walk took place in downtown Indianapolis. Fox 59’s Jennifer Ketchmark was there as the event emcee.
“I was diagnosed on April 4th with breast cancer, also with the BRCA gene,” said cancer survivor Nichole Olson. She had a double mastectomy on May 1st of this year and started chemo on May 28th.
Nichole’s chemo treatments finished up four days ago. Now, that’s a story of survival and a story shared by so many women who are fighting back!
“It’s important for me to use my voice in the community as someone who is a former Indianapolis Colts cheerleader, and also for someone who is in my thirties, to let people know cancer effects you no matter what age you are,” said Andrea Farrell.
The tally is in, and about 5,000 walkers got warmed up with Zumba Saturday morning for the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer 5K walk event. Then, they took on the streets of downtown Indianapolis in plenty of pink!
Beverley Austin, Manager of the Indianapolis Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event, knows how this event touches so many lives. “There are family members, friends, coworkers of people who have had the disease and those who want to put an end to it because they don’t want have to face it for their kids, family or friends,” said Austin.
In the mix, was our Fox59 Team, and there were a few familiar faces including Bob Donaldson, Ann Keil and Jennifer Ketchmark. Even our web manager, Amanda Rakes got in on the chilly morning walk.
“We are making a difference in the fight against breast cancer,” says Bev Austin. “Since 1991, there has been a 33% reduction in the number of breast cancer related deaths, and to continue that trend, we have to fundraise, we have to research, we have to help those cancer patients to ease the burden during treatment, and we’re here to do that.”
At last check, the walk raised more than $280,000!
