NEW CASTLE, Ind. (March 3, 2016) – A 6-year-old Henry County girl died from flu complications this week.

Jenna Mosier lived in Mooreland, a small town outside New Castle in rural Henry County. According to Henry County Coroner Stephen Hacker, the girl was brought by her family to Henry County Hospital and died Tuesday.

Hacker said the cause of death was complications from Influenza A. He said it was the first time he’d seen a flu death involving a child this young in his 42 years.

Jenna's death marks the 10th in Indiana this season so far and Jenna is also the youngest victim of the flu this year according to the latest report from the Indiana State Department of Health.

This comes when doctors say this flu season is milder than in years past.

A year ago at this time, the state health department reported 129 flu related deaths with 5 of those being under the age of 50.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently reported that this season's flu vaccine cuts the chance of getting the flu by nearly 60%.

Last season's flu shot only reduced flu risk by 20%.

Eskenazi Hospital physician Dr. Teri Greco says the flu can be tought for many of us, but it can be deadly to the very young and the very old, and that's why getting vaccinated even late in the season is recommended for everyone over the age of 6 months.

“Most people think because it’s March that the flu season is over, but it’ not. We’ll continue to see cases really for the next month or so and we still have vaccinations so, please come in and get vaccinated, " said Dr. Greco.

Services for Jenna will be at 1 p.m. Sunday, March 6, at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle. Visitation will be from 1-5 p.m. on Saturday, March 5.
