MUNCIE, Ind. – Muncie firefighters found a man dead inside a burning house on the city’s near north side early Saturday.

Shortly after midnight Muncie fire crews were called to a fire in a two and a half story house in the 600 block of North Madison Avenue.

When fire units arrived, flames were already through the roof. The building is divided into two apartments and while vacant, neighbors told firefighters homeless men are known to sleep there.

Firefighters located the body of 55-year-old Gregory Jackson under some debris near a doorway in the southeast corner of the building.

An autopsy is being conducted to determine cause and manner of death.

Witnesses told investigators, the Jackson was a smoker and also frequently used candles to provide lighting at night.  The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Fire crews remained on the scene until 2:30 p.m.  Search dogs were brought in to see if there might have been any one else in the building.  No other victims were located.

The fire caused the structure to collapse. The building was declared a total loss.
