(Dec. 4, 2015) – A homeless woman went around the restaurant asking people if she could have their leftovers, but she was mostly ignored. Most of them threw their food in the trash instead, reports KFOR.

But the woman’s plight touched the heart of Carmen Mendez inside the California Raising Cane’s restaurant on Nov. 26. She told a friend she’d give the woman her food if she asked, but couldn’t find her inside. She figured the woman had left and went to throw away her leftovers.

“As I was gonna throw away my one leftover chicken strip and like 5 fries I heard a very quiet voice ask me if I had anything left. I turned around and it was her,” Mendez wrote on Facebook.

She gave the woman her leftovers, but something didn’t feel quite right. She ended up buying the woman a meal and asked employees not to kick her out while they waited for the food.

“I could already see the disgust on people’s faces as she sat at the table eating the leftovers I had given her.”

The woman gave Mendez a hug and began crying and Mendez held her.

“So next time u judge a homeless person think twice…not all of them are homeless because of a drug addiction or because they are lazy.”
