INDIANAPOLIS — Indianapolis police are investigating a shooting that left a man dead at an apartment complex on Indy’s far east side Tuesday night.
Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers were dispatched around 8 p.m. to the 10100 block of John Marshall Drive in the Amber Woods apartment complex in response to reports that a person had been shot.
Officers arrived and found a man inside the driver’s seat of a van suffering from gunshot wounds, IMPD said. The victim was immediately transported to Eskenazi Hospital in critical condition. IMPD later confirmed around 9:16 p.m. Tuesday night that the male had died.
The victim was later identified as Robert Louis Hornbuckle Jr.
Preliminary information indicates the shooting may have occurred at the apartment complex a short distance away, IMPD said.
On Sunday, Oct. 1, IMPD officers investigated a shooting that also took place at the Amber Woods apartment complex. The victim in Sunday’s shooting, identified as 32-year-old Stephen Hale, died shortly after arriving at an area hospital.
IMPD said Tuesday night that detectives had identified the individual responsible for Sunday’s fatal shooting. However, the individual was released after being interviewed and in consultation with the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office, with IMPD further investigating a possible claim of self-defense in the case.
IMPD asks anyone with information about Tuesday’s shooting to contact Det. Matthew Melkey at 317-327-3475 or e-mail him at Matthew.Melkey@indy.gov. People are also encouraged to call Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at 317-262-TIPS and remain anonymous.
