INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Welcome to “Jim’s Gym.”
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department dedicated the Southwest District’s gym to Deputy Chief Jim Waters during a ceremony Friday. Mayor Joe Hogsett, Chief Bryan Roach and Commander Michael Spears were among those marking the occasion.
Waters was critically injured in a crash on July 23, 2017, along I-70 near the State Road 267 interchange. Investigators said he was going eastbound when a semi truck hit his vehicle from behind.
He was off-duty at the time and was driving an unmarked Ford Fusion police vehicle. Waters was originally taken to an area hospital in critical condition but later died from the injuries he suffered in the crash.
Waters, his father, brothers and friends regularly played basketball at the Southwest District gym. IMPD Chief Bryan Roach fondly remembers seeing Waters on the hardwood.
“It reminds me of Jim,” Roach said of the facility. “I was a commander here on the Southwest District and Jim was a commander in the East District, and many nights I’d come out here and he’d be playing basketball.”
Roach said Waters had a tremendous impact on the community.
“Still, to this day as I walk around and meet people, they talk about Jim and the impact he had and the time he spent with them,” Roach said.
