INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department confirms an officer was shot on the city’s east side Sunday night.

The officer, identified as 29-year-old Eric Rosenbaum, was taken to Eskenazi Hospital and is said to be in good condition.

Police say the shooting happened shortly after 7 p.m. Sunday in the 9000 block of Galaxy Lane.

Officials say this incident began as a theft in progress at the Lowe’s Home Improvement store near E 25th & Post Road.

According to investigators, Rosenbaum spotted the suspect running from the area.  When he caught up to the suspect, police say the two fought and in the struggle a shot was fired, striking the officer.

Neighbors told police the suspect fled to the backyard of a nearby home.  Other officers found the suspect and took him into custody.

Rosenbaum was treated at the scene, placed in a police car and taken Eskenazi Hospital where he is being treated for a single bullet wound.

The name of the suspect and possible charges have not been released.  Police say it is still very early in their investigation.
