INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers are praising the community for their outpouring show of support over the past few weeks. As fatal police shootings rocked cities like Dallas and Baton Rouge, here at home, IMPD officers said the community has stood by their side.
“I’ve had several people walk up to me and just out of the blue say thank you, tell us they have our support, they’re there for us,” said IMPD Patrolman Rob Turner.
The community is rallying behind IMPD officers in many ways, including paying for meals, sending cards and just sharing a hug.
“Their police department is going to be there each and every day and even with what’s going on, it’s just made us more resolute. The men and women of the police department put that uniform on each and every day. They’re working right now, they’ll be working tonight and tomorrow to provide safety in this community,” said Chief Troy Riggs.
The community is also backing IMPD with the #Backtheblue movement. People can buy merchandise with the hashtag. All proceeds go towards IMPD programs, training, and equipment.
“We are IMPD. We are Indy. I think that is a very strong message that resonates with community members. Here in Indy we are one community and we always act as one community,” said Dane Nutty, Executive Director of The Indy Public Safety Foundation.
In just the first few hours the website went online, they’ve already generated thousands of dollars of support. Chief Riggs said there’s more that the community can do, other than financial support.
“Any support the community can give us, whether it’s a pat on the back or to call us if they see something, we want them to say something. That goes a long way in keeping Indianapolis safe,” Riggs said.
