LAKE COUNTY, Ind. – A northern Indiana police officer was arrested for allegedly driving under the influence in Lake County early Saturday morning.
An Indiana State Trooper spotted Officer Mathew L. Anderson, 30, driving erratically while conducting a separate traffic stop around 2 a.m. The trooper immediately ended the traffic stop and started following Anderson on State Road 2 and pulled him over.
During the traffic stop, the trooper detected the strong odor of alcohol on Anderson’s breath and an operating while intoxicated investigation was then conducted.
Anderson told the trooper that he had weapons in the vehicle and that he was an officer with the Hammond Police Department.
The Hammond officer was offered the opportunity to perform standardized field sobriety tests, but he refused all tests, including the certified breath test at the Lake County Jail.
Anderson was then charged with operating while intoxicated (refusal), operating while intoxicated (endangering) and unsafe lane movement. His bond was set at $1,000.
